Frequently Asked Questions
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SPECIAL OLYMPICS?
To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, an individual must be at least eight years old and have an intellectual disability.

OUR TEAM MEMBERS
Our athletes range in age from 8 - 16 years old. We have both girls and boys on the team, but the number of boys we can accommodate is very limited due to limited coaching capacity.
HOW DO THE ATHLETES TRAIN?
Gymnastics combines strength, flexibility, and artistry. The Special Olympic routines are progressive in nature and are carefully designed to work on the most basic skills and build on that foundation. Our goal is to help all participate meaningfully and with a sense of accomplishment.
Practices are 1 hour in length. We start with a group warm-up, followed by training on individual apparatuses, and close with group games.

WHEN DO THE ATHLETES TRAIN?
We train from January to June on Sunday evenings. We do take some weekends off and you will receive a specific schedule when you register.

ARE THERE COMPETITIONS?
Yes, we compete at the Massachusetts State Summer Games, held in June. To be eligible to compete in the Summer Games, an athlete must be 8 years old and properly registered.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
There is no tuition. We are a volunteer-run organization. We fundraise to help cover costs.

HOW DO WE GET STARTED?
Please email us at: superstars_exxcel@aol.com.
Intake forms and waiver forms will be required. Special Olympics also requires that each athlete have a physical and attestation by a healthcare provider clearing the athlete to participate in gymnastics prior to starting the program.

DO YOU HAVE A WAITING LIST?
Our team is at capacity currently, but we do maintain a waiting list. Our capacity is driven by the ability to ensure a safe athlete to coach ratio and appropriate support for each athlete.
